Nicholas ‘Nicky Nick’ Wells truly believes he is a changed man. He is smarter. He is patient. And he is reverential to those in a position of authority. But is it all just a dangerous ruse? Only days after he is released from one of America’s most infamous prisons, Wells—now a martial arts expert—begins to execute his life’s new mission. Befriending a vulnerable woman to suit his needs, he begins to exact retribution against the most unlikely of targets—an elderly man afflicted with crippling terminal diseases. But is his target really a feeble old man? Or is it simply the beginning of a campaign aimed at those he thinks are responsible for the twelve-hundred and seventy-seven days he spent in a prison cell? In the third and final episode of a saga that began in 2010, R.M. Doyon returns his readers to upstate New York and the tragedy-stricken Schumacher family. This is where we meet many of the characters that Doyon richly introduced in Upcountry and Thou Torturest Me. They include the family patriarch, Hubie, a Vietnam veteran who doesn’t believe he’ll make it to his seventy-fifth birthday. Rejoining the narrative, too, are his devoted daughter, Joanne, herself the victim of an abusive husband but who has now created a happier life. Then there is the bruising county sheriff, Brian Boychuk, with decades-long links to the Schumacher clan, who at last begins to see that seemingly random acts of harassment are not so random after all. And, once again, we are drawn to the lives of a virtuous young man, who was born into an Amish life, and the ‘English’ girl he never stopped loving. In this gripping, page-turner of a novel, Doyon deftly brings to a conclusion the story of how one American family beset with cruelty, violence and heartbreak can ultimately experience closure and renewal.

I have just finished reading the third book in this trilogy & what an ending! I was just blown away. I love the author's style of writing because he makes the characters come alive. As I'm reading along, I can just picture each one & how they react to various situations. This book is a bit darker than the 1st 2 but it's by no means a horror story. The books need to be read in order to bring out the best understanding of each story line & person but this last one held more surprises & hidden secrets than the others. I'm still reeling from the ending & it was like having an epiphany when it suddenly dawns that "Oh yeah, so THAT'S who that was". I mean, I read a lot of mystery stories yet I wouldn't classify this trilogy as "mystery" so much as a novel with some surprises. And it just blew me away. I loved it. I loved the characters with Hubie Schumacher being the patriarch. While not the best husband or father, he's hard not to love, especially as the stories develop. Hubie is someone we can all relate to & you're cheering him on all the way. Treat yourself to these 3 books & read in order. They are awesome.

great read...couldn't put it down
I was honored and excited to be asked to read the final book, The Beginning Game, before it was published and have the opportunity to share a little about how the Trilogy ends! Have you read R. M. Doyon? His stories and style of writing is unique...and impressive. First, I encourage you to check out my reviews of the first two books, Upcountry and Thou Torturest Me. While each book can stand alone, the cumulative history of the involved families prepares readers to enter into the final intense drama that is triggered by one man--a sexy blond man who has just been released from prison... We've met him before, but now he's really the main character--a villain who convinces even himself that he's invincible...

So why did his first target be an old man, riddled with health problems and so many medications that his mind had begun to wander. He is still able to recognize what is happening, however, so even though he'd had hallucinations from time to time, he was sure the young man standing in front of his house was real... But his friends and family thought it was just another hallucination. At least until his truck was tampered with, causing an accident, and his garage had been burned down.

As soon as I started to read more about Hubie, my mind pulled out one of my favorite character actors, Ed Asner (who I met while traveling!). Think of his normal characteristics in movies/programs he's been in and you will recognize he'd easily play Hubie... Hubie is such a sympathetic character that readers quickly find love and then anger as he is pulled into a young man's plot for revenge... I've centered on these two characters simply because they drive the surrounding story of this last book...

Nicholas is a changed man since he was in prison. He had once been called Nick and was part of the young group that had lived there years ago. Now, he preferred to be called by his full name. How had he changed? Why he'd simply cleaned up his act physically, while learning to hide his true self and present a pleasant young and nice looking man to all those around him...

But when he met up with his old girlfriend, quickly pushed to gain access to her...and after finally having her concede to his overpowering strength, he became even more obsessed with her.

This is not a simple story, however, it is complicated with past murder, assaults, and conflicts with Amish neighbors that have moved through the years into an explosive series of criminal activities that has the involved families scrambling to protect their loved ones...

Surprise after surprise is introduced, without an earlier clue. But it's not a mystery...it is much more a police thriller as Brian Boychuk, still the local law officer faces not only a series of home invasions of the wealthiest homes of the area, but still tries to help solve what is happening to his friend, Hubie Schumacher, especially when Hubie's best friend is killed in a fight with a dog that undoubtedly had been trained to kill... And later, when that murderous dog is shot to death...

I found that the addition of the Amish characters provided an intriguing sub-plot as we meet the lone Amish man who had been there that night when everything had started. We find he has left the Amish life and has started working construction and also recently returned...perhaps because the woman he loved, who had been unconscious and then in rehabilitation for so many years was now back... But that young Amish man was now married and had a son...

Oh, I wish I could fill in on the surprises that erupt from the pages of this book as it comes to that explosive ending! Some are devastating to learn of the backstory of what had happened. Others are happily bringing individuals together to celebrate their love, while another is just a glimpse of what will happen in the near future...What a lovely enjoyable conclusion!

For me, the first two stories were fantastic, but the final book turns the trilogy into family drama that is Epic... Authentic... Unique... and Masterfully written to provide maximum reader enjoyment! I loved the trilogy...but this last book surely became a personal favorite for me. Wow! I didn't see any of what happened in The Beginning Game coming! It's an amazing read!

The Beginning Game R.M.Doyon
Someone is trying to gaslight or drive Hubie Schumacher crazy. What happens when an older man is plagued with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s and recounts seeing imaginary people, claims a man dressed in black comes to visit him and even hopes to convince the sheriff and his daughter that someone sabotaged his brakes and torched his garage. Someone is seriously out to take this man down but why? Enter Nicholas Wells formerly known as Nicky or Nick just getting out of prison and putting on the demeanor and manner of a changed man. But, as you get to know him and hear his thoughts, and join him during his dealings you will learn that his is just is way of starting The Beginning Game but who will the winner be?
After his release from prison and making sure while there he remained in good shape, he begins on the road to redemption but not in the way you might think. Claiming he wanted and has changed and might even enroll in college, a naïve and vulnerable girl named Belle would soon be his new instrument of abuse. While planning his next step in trying to take out Hubie and hoping to get even with those he feels put him in prison, the author has us all return to where it all began with the Schumacher family. From the author of Upcountry and Thou Torturest Me comes the third and final installment in the trilogy where Hubie is about to celebrate his 75th birthday and someone wants to make sure he doesn’t. Enter Joanne, his daughter who also suffered as we learned in the first novel and was abused by her husband Denny and is now trying to rebuild her life. The story unfolds with Hubie seeing and hearing people that are not there and trying to convince his friend and his daughter that he can remain at home but things start to spiral out of control as someone torches his garage, cuts his brakes on his truck and another claims to just want to help him.
Sheriff Brian Boychuck is at the center of this novel hoping to find out who is after Hubie but he has other difficulties to deal with a s someone is breaking into many of the unattended homes and stealing just what he wants and leaving no trace or fingerprints leaving him with no clues to the burglar’s identity. The second book in the trilogy focused on the relationships between the Amish and English dealing with an English girls who Josh Troyerr never stopped loving. Reenter Ria who suffered great injuries in this second novel and who is taken quite aback when Nick reenters her life but will she give in to what he wants as Belle has? With her friend Natasha guiding her will she fall prey to Nick’s wiles and wishes?
Nick’s whole appearance has changed after leaving prison and he no longer looks anything like he did before including his new ponytail and hot physique. Nick thinks he can rise above the law and enjoys tormenting the sheriff and many others blaming them for putting him away.
Hubie is taking medications for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s that can often create hallucinations and other side effects that no one believes as he relates what he thinks actually is happening to him but why?
Things spiral out of control when two soldiers come to the town bar and find themselves in the hospital seriously injured and with the bartender’s description of the man who attacked them several different stories emerge. As Hubie tries to reconcile what is happening to him someone decides to continue harassing him and this time his best friend Griz, his dog is the fatal victim. Belle the man’s girlfriend realizes that Tucker her dog is the guilty party as Nick has other plans for her and she refuses to succumb worried about her dog and why he traded in her truck.

Then something happens where Ria Cahill finds herself with Josh Troyer’s son Adam as her student in preschool and although they are attracted to each other after her one time with Nick and her guilt coming through she cannot deal with Josh remembering their past. As Josh and Ria were close Hannah planned to take him on and the end result was Adam even though she wound up in prison she has yet to contact Josh about their son. The English and the Amish have clashed in the second novel and the families protecting their own have different and diverse ways. Josh no longer living his Amish life and working in construction hopes that Ria will want to revisit their relationship but she cannot forget being in a coma, left for dead and the rehab and side effects that are still lingering.
As Ria searches her heart and the events of the day linger on as Brian has to deal with the death of the dog, the home invasions and now he has sketch of the man who attacked the soldiers, will he recognize who it is as the burglar taunts him with emails and notes allowing readers to know that this man is no stranger to Brian. But, Brian is not the only that this man is after as Ria goes missing and a startling revelation is made as the true identity of someone is revealed.
With Joanne and Booker finally hoping to take their vows, Hubie and his friends close by someone decides to not only take out Ria but someone who trusted him too. What happens will shock readers as this person had the pieces or pawns on a chess board all lined up hoping to take the pawns of the other players but what happens when all the pieces are in place and who wins and who says the final checkmate? Whose King will fall and how far?

Amish customs are different than ours and when someone disgraces themselves they are often banished or leave on their own. Hubie Schumacher is Brian’s close friend and although he had dementia/Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s did does not take away from his courage, spunk and the fact that even though most thought he lost his “Marbles,” they might realize that some were sharper than someone shooting and playing marbles hoping to take all from their opponent. An ending that is heartfelt, brings closure to many and to others sadness as the final pages are read, the story comes to a close but there are many whose lives changed and some who are know going to have their own beginnings and create their own stories. As Ria battles her own demons and comes face to face with someone from the past will she find it in her heart to forgive? What happens that changes the role of a young girl who realizes that she needs to find her way but not with this Amish community? Forgiveness, redemption, understanding, hope, fear, love, loyalties, friendships and revenge are just some of the issues that are brought to light in the final saga or chapter of those who are held near and dear to Hubie, his family and a cast of many well developed characters and vividly depicted scenes as author R.M.allows the reader to enter into the innermost thoughts of a deranged man who thought that he would never be stopped and always be apart and win THE BEGINNING GAME! Powerful, compelling, heartwarming and thought provoking!
I couldn't put it down!
The end of the trilogy! Mr. Doyon has woven the characters from all three books into an ending that brings closure to the
challenges and tribulations of the family and the cultures.
Throughout the story, Mr. Doyon keeps the reader turning the pages wondering what will happen next, what will happen to the main characters
and how will the story come to a conclusion.
A terrific story written by a person who appears to write for his audience, keeping one step ahead in developing suspense, while entertaining.

A must read for all!
